Susan Kernohan

Psychodynamic Counsellor

“We are born in relationship, we are wounded in relationship, and we can be healed in relationship” Harville Hendrix

Susan is a psychodynamic counsellor and a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

There is no one reason for seeking therapy.  For some it is a response to experiencing a life changing event.  For others it may be that you feel stuck and unable to move forward.  You may be experiencing a range of symptoms including panic attacks, anxiety and depression.  Whatever the reason Susan offers a safe therapeutic relationship in which to explore and heal.

The Approach

Psychodynamic therapy uses self-reflection and self-examination along with a focus on the relationship between therapist and client as a way of exploring our way of being – our patterns of behaviour, thoughts and feelings.

It is not a symptom focused therapy.  Instead it focuses on how our past shapes our present and, potentially, our future.  Exploring these echoes from the past allows insights to emerge helping you to understand why you feel and behave in a certain way and how this might impact your life in the present.

The goal is to develop a deeper understanding, getting to the root of the issue and provide the opportunity to create long-lasting change.  It is about moving from the learned coping mechanisms which have allowed you to survive towards healthier choices which will allow you to thrive.

How It Works

The psychodynamic process allows you to talk freely about whatever comes to mind, letting things emerge at your pace and then explore what they mean together.  It can be a slow process and the development is often subtle.  As a result some clients may come for a few weeks, others months and some for years.

Susan is open to working with anyone who is looking to explore how their past may be influencing their life today.  She is particularly interested in experience of childhood trauma and loss and addiction, both direct and indirect.

Susan offers a free 15 min introductory call to all potential clients.  Please contact her by email or phone to arrange.

Please note that Susan currently works at the Loft on a Friday only.
