Mrs Elaine Barber
Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (children and adolescents)
Elaine is a Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP), meaning that she is trained and qualified in providing psychological assessment and interventions with children, young people and families presenting with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. She is a member of the British Psychological Society’s Wider Psychological Workforce register (find out more here Find a psychologist | BPS).
Elaine completed her MSc in Applied Psychology for Children and Young People at the University of Edinburgh in 2008. She has been employed as a CAAP in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Â since qualifying and has worked in private practice since 2019.
Elaine is down to earth, friendly and approachable. She works in a collaborative and respectful way with children, young people and their families to provide a safe and containing therapeutic space. Elaine predominately uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, though draws on a number of therapeutic models to deliver individualised evidence-based therapeutic interventions for the treatment of a range of mental health difficulties, such as anxiety, emotional dysregulation, OCD, single event trauma, tics and mild to moderate mood difficulties. Parenting support is also offered, predominantly using the Incredible Years approach. This is an evidence-based parenting intervention, in which Elaine is an qualified and experienced practitioner.
Elaine aims to help children and young people improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing by gaining an understanding of their presenting difficulties and developing helpful coping strategies which can become lifelong skills. She also works collaboratively with parents to support them in supporting their children and young people.
